The unique and beautiful markings and pitted surface of travertine were formed by hot spring water carrying dissolved limestone particles which formed as a sedimentary rock under enormous pressure.

Travertine flooring and tiles are either supplied with these pitted areas left unfilled - as with the chipped edge and the tumbled or filled and honed.
